Update: What's Happening Along General Jim Moore Boulevard

In March we provided an update on field activity that was occurring along the southeastern portion of General Jim Moore Boulevard. As requested by California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), the FORA ESCA RP began conducting additional munitions verification in a 46 acre parcel within the Seaside Munitions Response Area (MRA), adjacent to the roadway.

Over the last two and a half months ESCA field crews have been cutting brush, roping off survey lanes, using digital geophysical mapping equipment to identify any potential munitions items (known as targets) and then investigating each of those targets. During the investigation any recovered items are then determined to be either standard debris such as non-munitions related metal, munitions debris, or actual munitions items.

During the investigation phase UXO technicians did recover munitions debris and small amounts of munitions and explosives of concern (MEC). Four recovered items were detonated last Thursday, June 15, 2017 (see blog post). Next, the data from this validation process will be analyzed and then the results documented and reported to DTSC, EPA, and the Army.

For a more detailed explanation of this process, please see slides 4 - 6 of the most recent FORA ESCA Informal Community Workshop presentation. These three slides titled: Seaside MRA, Seaside MRA: RQA Implementation Process, and Additional Verification: Process & Next Steps provide a more in-depth look at the history of the Seaside MRA.

As work progresses FORA ESCA RP will continue to post updates.
